Echoes of Identity: Tracking Filipino Cultural Landscapes in Edmonton is an ongoing, community-led cultural mapping initiative designed to document, safeguard, and celebrate the physical and intangible heritage of the Filipino community in Edmonton.
As one of the fastest-growing demographics in the region, Filipinos have profoundly shaped the cultural, economic, and social fabric of Edmonton. Yet, much of this vibrant history—from informal community gathering spots and heirloom artifacts to personal migration journeys and living traditions—remains unrecorded in traditional historical archives.
Echoes of Identity bridges this gap. By combining geographic mapping with community-sourced storytelling, this project creates a living archive that honors the contributions of past and present generations while providing a foundation of identity for those to come.
Why Cultural Mapping Matters
Cultural mapping is a powerful tool for community empowerment, heritage preservation, and civic engagement. For the Filipino diaspora in Edmonton, this initiative serves four vital purposes:

Methodology & Framework
The Echoes of Identity cultural map is built upon a participatory framework that prioritizes community voices and collaborative research. Our process includes:

Crowdsourced Community Submissions: Gathering direct contributions from community members, families, artists, elders, and local business owners through targeted surveys.

Oral History & Narrative Collection: Recording personal migration stories, intergenerational reflections, and context behind local landmarks and traditions.

Inventory & Archival Research: Documenting physical assets, attire, artifacts, and community organizations to build a comprehensive inventory of local cultural resources.

Interactive Digital Mapping: Organizing collected data into an intuitive, filterable map, allowing users to explore assets by location, category, and historical context.

Cultural practices are the traditions, customs, beliefs, and ways of life that connect us to our Filipino heritage. Whether celebrated at home, in church, or with the wider community, these practices help preserve our identity while creating new traditions in Edmonton.

Edmonton Landmarks: Landmarks are more than locations on a map -- they are places of belonging, celebration, faith, learning, work, remembrance, and community. They are where friendships began, traditions were celebrated, milestones were achieved, and new lives were built.

Philippine Artifacts: Many Filipinos have brought meaningful artifacts from the Philippines or acquired them while living in Canada to preserve their cultural identity and pass traditions on to future generations. These objects represent our history, artistry, beliefs, daily life, and the diversity of cultures across the Philippines.

Philippine Attire and Fashion: Traditional garments, indigenous weaves, and contemporary diaspora attire reflect the country's rich cultural diversity, history, and artistic traditions. It connects us to our roots while allowing us to express our identity in new and meaningful ways.
Project Leadership & Partners
Echoes of Identity is an initiative of the Philippine Arts Council, conceptualized and led by Project Director, Researcher, and Curator Ida Beltran Lucila. The expansion of this cultural map form a core mandate of her tenure as Edmonton’s Historian Laureate
(2026–2028), reflecting a dedicated commitment to preserving diaspora histories, elevating underrepresented community stories, and enriching the cultural landscape of the city. Media production is led by MediaSon, with generous support from the Alberta Ministry of Arts, Culture and Status of Women, the City of Edmonton, and the Edmonton Heritage Council.
