WOVEN HISTORIES:
HONOURING DIVERSE JOURNEYS IN THE HEART OF ALBERTA

Woven Histories is an intercultural initiative designed to explore and celebrate the shared landscape of our province through a unique collaborative lens.

Scheduled for April 2027, this project moves beyond simple cultural showcasing to achieve a true synthesis of diverse creative perspectives.

By bringing together Filipino-Albertan, Indigenous, and ethnocultural artists, we aim to weave a unified narrative that honors individual heritage while highlighting the common threads that bind us all to the heart of Alberta.

A Multi-Disciplinary Collaboration

The heart of the project lies in the intentional integration of three distinct artistic mediums:

  • Literature: A diverse team of writers will participate in intensive workshops to co-author an "Anchor Narrative," a central literary piece that serves as the interpretive key for the entire project.

  • Visual Arts: The project features a curated selection of existing visual works that reflect themes of land, memory, and cultural identity.

  • Film: Short films and a specialized micro-documentary will capture the collaborative process and present stories of resilience and belonging.

A project supported by the Government of Alberta, Ethnocultural and Anti-Racism Grants Program.

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

We are currently seeking artistic works for Woven Histories: Honouring Diverse Journeys in the Heart of Alberta.

This initiative seeks to create a profound intercultural dialogue by weaving together existing works of visual art, literature, and film into a single, cohesive "Anchor Narrative." We are specifically inviting submissions from Filipino-Albertan, Indigenous, and diverse ethnocultural creators whose work explores the complexities of identity and belonging in Alberta.

Submission Categories

We are seeking existing works in the following mediums:

  • Visual Arts: Painting, photography, textiles, digital art, or mixed media.

  • Literary Arts: Poetry or short prose pieces.

  • Short Films: Narrative, documentary, or experimental films (5–15 minutes).

Thematic Focus

Submissions should resonate with one or more of the following pillars:

  • Land and Memory: Connections to the Alberta landscape and the concept of "home."

  • Hyphenated Identity: Bridging cultural heritage with contemporary Albertan life.

  • Legacy and Resilience: Stories of community, labor, and the threads that bind generations.

Why Participate?

Selected works will be featured in a public exhibition in February 2027 and included in a permanent Digital Chapbook archive. Your work will be interpreted through a central, co-authored Anchor Narrative, placing it in a unique province-wide conversation with other diverse voices.

Submission Requirements

To be considered, please email the following to PhilippineArtsCouncil@gmail.com.

  1. A digital copy or high-resolution image/link of the work.

  2. A brief artist statement describing the work’s connection to the "Woven Histories" theme.

  3. A short biography.

Deadline

To ensure the best balance of perspectives, we will be reviewing submissions as they arrive and will conclude the call-out once the project's capacity is met.
