LAKBAY
A Journey of the Philippines through the Fabric of Identity Showcase and Cultural Mapping
July 11, 2026. Saturday. 3-5pm. Edmonton City Hall
Presented by Philippine Arts Council and Harlijk Productions.
Lakbay is a curated cultural showcase and an interactive, community-led odyssey. Designed as a living extension of our provincial mapping initiative, Echoes of Identity: Tracking Filipino Cultural Landscapes in Alberta, this event transforms the runway into a collective space for discovery, documentation, and the celebration of our heritage.
The Experience: From Roots to Reflection
Lakbay invites you to traverse the Philippine archipelago through the sensory lens of textiles and attire. The event unfolds in two distinct, yet deeply connected, segments -
The Curated Odyssey
An exhibition and runway segment featuring professional collections. This portion highlights the authentic craftsmanship of master weavers and contemporary designers who reimagine traditional motifs—bridging the gap between ancestral techniques and modern Filipino-Albertan identity.
The Community Runway
The heart of Lakbay. We invite community members to step onto the stage wearing their own regional attire. Whether it is a cherished heirloom, a traditional weave from a province of origin, or a contemporary piece that reflects your personal journey, this is your opportunity to bring your story to the forefront.
Contribute to the Map
Beyond the stage, Lakbay serves as a vital archival project. We are actively inviting participants to help us build a more comprehensive record of our community’s footprint in Alberta.
The Archival Station
Onsite, we will host a dedicated space for professional photography and storytelling. We invite you to document your attire and share the narrative behind it.
Recording Our Stories
Through brief, guided interviews, we will capture the history of the garments and the personal experiences of those who wear them. Why this piece? What region does it represent? What does this attire mean to your identity here in Canada?
Mapping the Continuity
Every photograph and narrative collected will be tagged to its corresponding geographic region and integrated into the Echoes of Identity digital map. By participating, you are ensuring that your family’s thread becomes a permanent, visible part of the tapestry of Alberta’s Filipino community.
Join the Journey
Lakbay is a tribute to the artisans who keep our history alive and to the community members who embody our traditions in their daily lives. By showcasing both professional artistry and personal heritage, we demonstrate that Filipino culture is not a static object—it is a vibrant, evolving narrative.
Walk the runway, tell your story, and help us weave our collective history into the record of Alberta’s future.
